New Publicity Director,
Debbie Edwards, has been carrying out an
ambitious campaign to get the word out about
Soap Box Derby racing to area families.
The KCSBD has already hosted displays at the Boy
Scout Pinewood Derby Rallies at Cabela's and at
Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Lee's Summit.
We also had a booth at the KC Remodeling and
Garden Show at the American Royal Feb. 11-13.
This year we will be returning to the KC Auto
Show on March 2-6 at Bartle Hall. We also
plan to have a display at the KC Home, Lawn &
Garden Show March 25-27. We need to have
volunteers manning our booths at each event.
If you would like to help out, please
contact Debbie Edwards at
debedw@aol.com or
913-393-4889. Or, check for
emails from Debbie asking for your help.
CONSTRUCTION & DRIVING
CLINICS
This year we will be holding
all of our Construction and Driving Clinics at
our track at 4600 Eastern Ave.
See map. In addition to being
Construction & Driving Clinics, these will also
be Rookie Days targeting kids and their families
interested in Soap Box Derby. We will be
issuing 'tickets' at each of our publicity
events (described above) for the opportunity to
test drive a Soap Box Derby car on our hill.
We will have soap box derby cars available for
any boy or girl age 7 to 20 to try out. Of
course, new drivers never start out from the top
of the hill. We always make sure that each
driver fits in the car properly and can reach
the brake pedal. Then we take them part
way down the hill and let them coast to the
bottom. If we feel they can handle it, we
gradually let them start out higher and higher
on the hill until they are ready to start from
the top. A fully weighted car, released
from the top of the hill, will reach close to 30
mph at the finish line. Drivers who can
drive successfully from the top of the hill will
be issued an Official KC Soap Box Derby Driver's
License.
Besides being Rookie Days,
these will also be Construction Clinics where we
will cover how to assemble your car and
especially any new building rules that have been
made over the winter. Therefore these
clinics are highly recommended for both first
time racing families and experienced racers.
We suggest first time builders bring their car
kits unassembled to the clinic so we can help
you to properly position your driver in his/her
car. Current racers must update their cars
to current rules.
The Rookie
Day/Construction/Driving Clinic dates and times
are:
-
Saturday, April 30, 10am to 6pm
-
Sunday, May 1, 10am to 6pm
-
Saturday, May 7, 10am to 6pm
Additionally, we plan
to have some USED CARS FOR SALE. If you
have a used car that you would like to sell,
please bring it to the clinics.

For the first time in a few
years, we will be including the Masters Division
at our local race this year. Actually,
what will be happening is that we will be
hosting the Region IV All-American Local Race
for the Masters Division. All Masters cars
in the Region IV area will come to Kansas City
to compete. In recent years there have
been fewer Masters car builders, so many race
cities have not been able to come up with the
required field of 6 Masters cars to have an
official AA Local Race for the Masters Division.
Region IV Directors have decided hold a Masters
race for the entire region. Each year the
Region IV Masters race will rotate to a
different city in Region IV. KC gets to
hold the first Region IV Masters Local Race!
We hope to have an exciting race and that, if
you are considering participating in the Masters
Division, you will start building your car right
away!
